This school's approach to Safeguarding is based on the principles of Safe Recruitment of staff and rigorous Child Protection procedures, with the provisions of 'Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016' (KCSIE 2016) adhered to.

Safer Recruitment:

School (and MAT) staff have attended 'Safer Recruitment' training  in 2015, led by Paul Jones fom Shropshire LA, and a minimum of one governor/staff member with this training sits on ALL interview panels.  All relevant checks (DBS etc) are carried out on staff, visitors, contractors, governors etc, and are available in our Single Central Record, which is updated regularly.

Child Protection - general:

At Stokesay we aim to help parents understand that, like others, we have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils and that occasionally, we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies particularly when there are concerns about a child.

 

We  recognise that we have an important responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.  This applies to the whole of the school's workforce, along with volunteers, governors and any contractors working on the school site. In staff recruitment and selection we ensure that all staff have been appropriately checked for their suitability to work with the children in our school.

 

We also ensure we: 

 

  • Raise awareness of safeguarding issues where relevant and equip children with the skills needed to keep them safe.
  • Develop and implement procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse.
  • Support pupils.
  • Establish a safe environment free from discrimination or bullying, where children can learn and grow happily.

Prevention of radicalisation:

As part of our Child Protection Policy (above), we have information on how the school works to prevent radicalisation.  Staff and governors carried out Channel training in 2015/16, as a key element of the Prevent Strategy - by safeguarding individuals by assessing their vulnerability to being drawn into extremism.

If we suspected that children were being abused through extremism we would consult in the normal way with the appropriate safeguarding contact, and would seek advice from the West Mercia Prevent Team, by dialling 101 and asking to speak to either DC Gary Shepherd (01386 591816) or his colleague Jamma Greenow (o1386 591825). As with all CP referrals, this will be dealt with by the appropriate professionals at every stage. WRAP Training and the 'Prevent' Duty:

The Head of School and Chair of Governors attended training on WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness about PREVENT) in November 2014.

 

Following this, Stokesay and Church Stretton School commissioned training from Shropshire LA on the Prevent Agenda in January 2015 (Mansel Davies). The presentation shared at this training was disseminated to staff in a subsequent staff meeting and our curriculum matrices show where each class teach explicit units as suggested on the http://www.preventforschools.org/ website.  As mentioned above, staff and governors completed CHANNEL awareness training on the Prevent Duty in 2015/16.

 

What is the Prevent Strategy?


'Prevent' is a national government strategy designed to stop people becoming radicalised by extremist ideologies of any kind, and every school has a statutory duty to raise awareness and work hard to fulfil its responsibilities in this area.

While there is absolutely no suggestion whatsoever that this is an issue in our locality, I am sure we are all aware of some of the difficult issues facing modern society, and so as part of Stokesay's commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the Prevent Strategy, which aims to educate all children to help them develop into positive members of British society. This has always been at the core of what schools are all about anyway.

At Stokesay, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum, so that all of our children embrace difference and diversity, and feel valued members of our school community. We place high priority on spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, which we achieve through our quality delivery of: PSHE, RE, assemblies etc, which all instil in our children a positive and strong self-identity and foster a sense of belonging.

In terms of what this actually means for the children: we clearly do NOT launch off into discussions with primary age children of the specifics of extremism, that would not be appropriate. Instead, this means things like: discussion in class and assembly on ideas such as fairness, democracy, shared British values, and the importance of treating others with respect and understanding, and specific curriculum work on this too. I'm sure you will agree that this is exactly the type of thing that has always been discussed in Stokesay anyway.
