Our class information:
THE EYFS CURRICULUM
The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) at Stokesay Primary School is made up of Rainbow 1 (Nursery class) and Rainbow 2 (Reception class). We spend some time separately as classes but share CIL (Child-Initiated Learning) sessions each day as well as Assembly times and music.
Learning in EYFS covers 7 areas. The Prime areas of learning are in: Personal, Social and Emotional learning, Physical Development and Communication and Language. The Specific areas are: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Underpinning these areas are the CEL (characteristics of effective learning) which includes how engaged the children are, how well motivated they are and how they think creatively and critically. this involves problem solving.
We work on a joint half-termly theme which links to a whole school plan to provide a context for learning. We aim to deliver the curriculum with an active, fun, hands-on approach involving opportunities to work in different settings including the Outdoors, Forest Schools and taking children on educational visits.
In Rainbow 1 there is a focus on the Prime areas of learning with daily delivery of Letters and Sounds. Each session includes a block of CIL through play and AD (Adult-Directed) activities in other areas of learning.
In Rainbow 2 daily AD sessions include Letters and Sounds, Literacy, Mathematics, Reading Circuits/Guided Reading and learning in other areas e.g. Understanding the World. There are also regular CIL sessions throughout the week some of which are shared with Rainbow 1.
Each day children in Rainbow 1 need to have with them a change of clothing, water bottle if desired and a coat ready for outside learning and on a Wednesday be dressed in comfortable clothes and easy fastening shoes for P.E.
Children in Rainbow 2 need to have a P.E. kit in school weekly, a water bottle daily and their book bag with reading diary and BEAR words kept inside. They need to change their reading book from the box provided on a daily basis.
